Alexandra Valdes

Alexandra Valdes is an enrolled tribal citizen of the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska, as well as a descendant of the Athabascan. Alexandra is the mother of two children, ages four and one. She has dedicated her career to working for organizations that empower American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) communities. She currently serves as the Executive Director of the Los Angeles City/County Native American Indian Commission (LANAIC), a joint advisory Commission for LA City and the County of Los Angeles. She serves on various County, City, and community initiatives including the LA County Anti-Racism, Diversity & Inclusion Vision, Mission & Guiding Principles Workgroup and Race Equity Tool Workgroup, the LA County COVID-19 Vaccine Workgroup and Equity Subcommittee, the City of Los Angeles Civic Memory Project Land Acknowledgment Subcommittee, and the LA Native COVID Response Working Group.

Prior to her current role, Alexandra worked for her Alaska Native Regional Corporation, Sealaska Corporation. In this role she developed, implemented, and managed educational and professional development programs and opportunities for tribal member shareholders and descendants. She also served as a project assistant at the Seattle Indian Health Board’s Urban Indian Health Institute, a tribal epidemiology center that focuses on the national urban AIAN population. During her graduate studies, she interned for Haa Aani, a Southeast Alaska based non-profit Community Development Financial Institution committed to creating sustainable economic opportunities for Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian people.

Alexandra was a First Nations Futures Fellow at Stanford University and a Barbara Jordan Health Policy Fellow with the Kaiser Family Foundation where she worked for the US Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Brown University and a Master of Public Policy from the University of Southern California. While at Brown, Alexandra was a member of the women’s Division I water polo team.

In her spare time, Alexandra enjoys spending time outdoors and having dance parties with her daughters and her husband Andrew.
