Native American Indian Commission

Statement from the Los Angeles City/County Native American Indian Commission

October 25, 2021

The Los Angeles City/County Native American Indian Commission is horrified by the racist behavior of a Riverside high school math teacher that were video recorded and went viral last week. Sadly, we are not surprised. This type of abhorrent behavior is born out of centuries of dehumanization and attempted erasure of Native peoples. We stand with the student that courageously stepped forward to shine light on this injustice. We stand with Native children, parents, and relatives everywhere that are fighting every day for the dignity and well-being of Native youth. We hope this can be a catalyst that leads to deep, systemic educational transformation, including investing in tribal consultation, curriculum reform and required Native American culture and heritage educational programs, not only in Riverside but throughout California.
